Following uproar over increased rate at which female genital mutilation is being carried in different parts of Tharaka and Igambangombe sub counties, now the administration has risen to act.
In a raid conducted by police officers from Gaceuni post in Kamakarariki sub unit in Kathangacini location in Tharaka North subcounty, two girls one in form 1 and the other in class 7 alongside one woman identified as Joevanah Karema with the latter being suspected to have aided in circumcising of the two girls were arrested and detained in Makutano police station in Shauri.
Upon investigation,it was found that one of the girls has had undergone the cut in recent past while the other girl was yet to face the cut. This gave the authorities a go ahead to prosecute the aider suspect where before the magistrate in Marimanti law courts, the suspect denied all the charges read on her.
During the raid by the police, the parents of the girls are said to be away from home thus evading the arrest by the officers.
Tharaka Nithi county commissioner Beverly Opwora has since warned those conducting the retrogressive FGM in the county of dire consequences once apprehended in the crackdown that they have launched.
It is worrying that the trend has turned to underage girls and as woman leader i am saddenned.I warn those conducting FGM that once we catch up with you we will charge you with violating anti-FGM laws and children rights,” Opwora said.
Having denied all the charges, the woman was offered Sh 100,000 cash bail or Sh 200,000 bond while the case shall be heard on 23 of November 2020.
