An American based retired medical doctor Mr. Steve Gruba has been instrumental in setting up of several development projects that Mukothima mission church under father Eliud Mwenda has been initiating for Mukothima community.
Speaking to Newsflash 254, father Mwenda said Dr. Steve has been of great help in sector of education in the community where he has supported the church in acquiring vital supplies for smooth operation of the school. “Through Dr. Steve we have been able to acquire a standard cooker for our school, a freezer for storing meat and other supplies for longer life, free books for our pupils and he has also built a kitchen for the school,” said Father Mwenda.
In supporting the technology and digital advancement in the community, the father in charge revealed that plans are under way by Dr. Steve to help the parish establish a free and reliable internet connection that will help youths in their studies and others who may like to research on various issues like farming.
However the internet is to be restricted to specific sites to avoid users visiting sites that may expose them to explicit contents thus eroding their social morals as father Mwenda puts. “During our negotiations for the internet, Steve wrote to me warning me to ensure the internet is restricted to specific sites to avoid users visiting explicit content fed sites such as pornography and devil worshipping sites,” he said.
Another great injection the sponsor has done to the church is supplying them with eggs incubator .Father Mwenda said through their incubator, they are able to incubate 500 eggs monthly which after 21 days, they haves the chicks ready.
After rearing the chicks for a month, they sells the young chicks to surrounding farmers at lower prices of Sh 250 compared to other markets where a chick of similar size goes at around Sh 300.Also father Mwenda says they sells the young chicks even to far markets like Meru town depending on demands. This has helped the farmers and also the church to raise capital to cater for bills and carry out charity works.
Finally the US based sponsor has pledged to support the Mukothima parish in publishing a magazine that will be highlighting projects being carried out in the community by the parish and other empowerment and educative programs towards educating the community.
On our inquiry as to how father Mwenda came in touch with his sponsor, he told Newsflash 254 that it has taken the efforts of his U.S based priest and personal friend Father Lazarus Kirigia who hails from Meru county and particularly in Giaki parish. `Father Lazarus has been very instrumental in growth of Mukothima parish since all the support I gets from America are as a results of his efforts since he is the one who has been connecting me to our sponsors there,’ he said.
Father Mwenda thanked the sponsor for his unwavering support towards the Mukothima parish and Tharaka community at large. He termed him as a true missionary though based in U.S.
