A standoff ensued between security team led by Tharaka North OCPD Benson Makumbi and Kirigicha locals in Mukothima ward, Tharaka South Sub County and who were in support of Tharaka MP Gitonga Murugara during commissioning of police residential houses at Kirigicha police post by the legislator.
Trouble started when the police boss made his way through, in company of police officers aiming at thwarting the event from going on but faced off with volatile locals and the Member of Parliament who became fierce to the team leaving them with no alternative than providing security to the locals during the whole event.
Addressing residents, Murugara strongly faulted the attempt by the OCPD to thwart his function whereas he was helping his officers. He insisted Kirigicha is in his area of jurisdiction and therefore will get on serving the residents.
“How can I be against you whereas I am today commissioning these six residential rooms for your security officers, what I know is that Kirigicha is in Tharaka constituency and I shall continue dispensing my duties to the residents just like other places of my jurisdiction,’’ Murugara said.
Further, the Tharaka legislator warned Tharaka North DCC against instructing him on the areas he should avoid visiting as the MP since he hails from Tharaka and thus as the MP he knows his boundaries.
I want to tell the DCC Tharaka North that he should not instruct me not to visit Riamwanki, Kirigicha and Kiothioroka areas. These areas are in Tharaka Constituency and a resident and the area MP, I know the extent of the areas I should be serving,’’ he said.
Notably, OCPD Makumbi declined addressing the locals when he was offered a chance to, and even rejected the seat he had been offered during the function.
From Kirigicha, the MP continued with his convoy to Riamwanki primary school in Njoguni hill in Ntoroni location Mukothima ward where he commissioned 2 ultra-modern classrooms all built through the CDF kitty.
Also, Safaricom foundation who had also accompanied the MP commissioned one classroom that they have funded through the lobby of Murugara.
The 3 classes now being the only permanent structures in the schools, Murugara said he will embark on putting up more classrooms for the school in bid to modernize the facility and support education in the area.
“The school has been operating in a mud walled weak structures but through CDF kitty, I will ensure I put more permanent classes so that the school becomes modern and the children have a conducive environment to study,’’ Murugara pledged.
In his tenure as Tharaka MP, Murugara alias GG has been on records advocating for development on Tharaka border points which at times are left unattended over feared disputes.
He finally urged residents to peacefully live with their neigbours terming peace as the most vital tool towards nation building.
