The rift being witnessed in the Njuri Ncheke council of Ameru elders has for another time been displayed after a section of elders from Tharaka Nithi County met at Kathwana and purportedly held an election of their representatives in the county.
In a meeting held on 17th of November this year at Kathwana, a section of elders from the county led by Wilfred Nthiga Makanya, the elders formed Tharaka Nithi county council of elders which he said would be used to deal with affairs to do with Tharaka Nithi.
“Tharaka Nithi County being an independent county has never had a chance to elect their own council that would help deal with internal affairs happening within our county. That is why we have decided to form our own council to help us run our own affairs as an independent county from Meru, ’Makanya had said earlier.
Speaking to News Flash 254, the interim secretary in the Tharaka Nithi council said their new council would be pivotal especially in meeting leaders of higher ranks in their bid to table their interests which they feel would be of benefit to the people of Tharaka Nithi.
“After seating and discussing we noticed that in case we want to meet for instance the president, we have no one to lead us through the process. Also in matters to do with our county especially on the FGM,the council will help us meet the county commissioner to advise her on how she can handle the issue for the best of our people,’’ he continued.
It is after the meeting that the larger Njuri Ncheke operational head Mr.Alfonce Chabari Kamwara has come out to dismiss the meeting and the election which according to him, was held by people who had their own personal interest and not on behalf of the council.
According to kamwara, Tharaka Nithi County has 12 elders who participates in the affairs of the council but surprisingly the said meeting was attended by only 3 elders who elected and announced themselves as the officials of the various positions they announced.
As the operation head, Kamwara said that any meeting being conducted should under his docket and therefore as the council they do not recognize the meeting of the three elders which he said is aimed at dividing the council.
“The original Njuri Ncheke council of elders does not recognize regional branches of the council but instead it is governed by the main chair elder Linus Katheera to carry out its operation. Therefore the issue of the elders to elect their own chairman is ill planned and of no good intention,’’ he said.
He further asked the elders to cease from having political allegiance since the aim of the council is to support all the leaders to help them deliver to the people.
The council has on several occasions been portrayed to be divided as a section of elders especially from Tharaka Nithi have been distancing themselves from several decisions made by the larger council which has been raising concerns on the cause of their differences.
The larger council having disowned the newly formed council and its’ leadership, its remain a matter of waiting to see how the council will carry out its operation in Tharaka Nithi as an independent council away from that of the larger Meru as they purport.
