As the country maneuver through devastating moments wreaked by the outbreak and spread of Covid-19, residents of Kamanyaki location, Tharaka South Sub County in Tharaka Nithi county are living in fear after wild dogs roaming the places turn to be disaster.
According to residents, the dangerous animals that have been going round the locations killing resident’s livestock in Mukeria hills and Kamanyaki location, appeared last night in Kirukuma location in Tharaka south sub county where the villagers battled the dogs for the better parts of the night as they indiscriminately attacked their animals.
“last night we were invaded by roaming wild dogs at around 8.00 pm where they attacked our livestock and in the process they killed and fed on my goat leaving behind the skin and bones. Two other goats have gone missing since then without trace,‘ said one the locals.
Locals say it is the first time the wild dogs are invading the villages killing their livestock and thus they are fearing that they might continue losing their animals if immediate action is not taken to save them from the disaster.
Now the locals are living in fear as they say the wild dogs where about is not known and thus the dangerous animals might return to kill their animals. Also the residents said they are fearing for their lives as the dogs are also known to be dangerous to an extent of attacking even human beings.
“Our greatest fear is that these dogs might return to our animals and also attacking us especially the young children who may not be in a position to defend themselves which may lead to lose of lives or body injuries,’’ they said.
Wild dogs commonly known as African wild dogs are carnivore mammals and the most dangerous in the dogs family using their groups as strength to overpower their prey. They hunts in groups of about 7-20 members making them strong for any prey to attack them or escape which make them strong to even kill a buffalo.
The residents are now appealing to Kenya Wildlife Service officers to make haste and lay traps to ensure they eliminate the animals from the villages before situations worsens.
