Tharaka university college a constituent college of Chuka university for the second day continued to admit this year’s students placed into the institution to pursue various degree programs from all the 47 counties of Kenya.
This is double the number of 600 students that the university admitted in last year’s September intake which is an indicator that the university is growing in a desirable pace to attain the population of 3000 students currently.
The institution which will be the only university in Tharaka after acquiring the charter, has completely changed the outlook of Gatunga locality with housing business booming around the institution to cater for the rising demand of accommodation facilities for students.
Speaking to News Flash 254,the principal in charge Mr Peter Muriungi said the locality still need to invest in housing since the school population is mushrooming and the institution might not be at a position to put up sufficient hostels to house the entire population.
“I am urging the investors who have bought parcels of land around the university and its surrounding to put up rental houses on them so that our students who fails to secure accommodation inside the institution are able to rent around the school premises,” Muriungi said.
Muriungi further said that they are expecting that even the financial institutions like Banks will soon start settling in the area for the growing market since the university does not allow transactions of Money in cash and thus such investments will be pivotal in the growth of the university.
However as a university that has started from scratch, the Principal revealed they are facing a number of challenges that they wish the government can chip in and assist.
Mr.Muriungi said that water has been the biggest challenge not only for the university but also the locality around.Recently the university has sunk a 250 metres borehole that will be used to supply water to various parts of the institution.Although as the university, Muriungi said their biggest concern is their students who are leaving within the locality which has no water and are not in a position to access it from the university.
“Our worries and concerns has been the students who are living within the university locality where water is a great challenge for them.I am therefore asking the government to come up with a sustainable water project that will assist both the locals and our students living outside the facility for easy living,” Muriungi pleaded.
Another challenge is roads network leading to the institution. For instance the principal cited a road from Miomponi leading to the university that he said is lowering the standard of the university in the eyes of the visitors who are streaming into the place.
The principal said that if the roads connecting the locality and the university can be upgraded to tarmac standard, even the student would be having simple time when accessing the facility from their residential areas especially a time like now it is raining.
In our quest to know about the institution’s preparedness towards fighting the devastating Covid-19,the principal assured parents that the university is ready to fight the pandemic through laid down measures.`
`We have hand washing stands erected at strategic points all the school, temperature screening at the gate, automatic temperature screening machines at various points and we have ensured that our classes are well spaced to avoiding spreading of the virus among students. And above that,we have a well equipped isolation center for both genders for students who are suspected to be infected to be observed before seeking help from above,” the principal assured.
We made an effort to hear from Mr Mugo a parent from Kirinyaga who had accompanied his daughter for admission where he said they were happy to be in a different county and he hoped the best for his daughter.“I am pleased to be in this county today being my first time and for sure the place is awesome.I am hopeful that my daughter is going to make it here at Tharaka University and graduate with her degree,” Mugo said.
And finally the University head requested the immediate community to be caring to the students from different parts of the country living amongest them in the locality so that they feel at ease and also be good ambassadors of Tharaka to other willing students in their community.
